Textual Analysis

The website I chose to do the textual analysis is the personal website of a popular hip hop producer in United States in this few years, DJ Mustard, who have produced many hit songs that ranked highly in Billboard for singers in United States and also releases his own mixtape as a rapper. In my opinion, the amount of content in this website is quite sufficient as the personal website of a musician, which has included the personal informations of DJ Mustard himself, full list of his music production works, details information of his own performance tour and ways to contact  DJ Mustard like email address, meanwhile keep updating with news about him. Also providing information of his social media accounts for visitors to interact with him.

The structure of the website is very neat and tidy, it is being divided into 6 parts according to the types of content it providing as I mentioned, which are “Tour”, ”Music”, “News”, “About”, “Contact” and “Social Media”. The website has 6 pages in total while homepage occupied one and all parts conquering an individual page excluding the “Social Media” part as that part is directing to his social media sites. The website had built up a navigation bar that listed all these pages one by one for visitors to access different pages by clicking the specific text button on the bar easily, and the navigation bar also included the “Social Media” part by adding icon of specific social media platform that DJ Mustard uses like instagram and twitter.

Layout design of this website is so consistent that all 6 pages are using the same layout design, which the design is combined by three frame as header, body and footer, the content in header and footer is constant in all pages while the content in body frame will change on each page respectively. The header frame is containing an image logo of DJ Mustard and the navigation bar mentioned above, while the footer frame is containing copyright logo and a “back to top” button to direct users return to the top of the page after scrolling down to the bottom.

However I found the body frame design of the “Music” page is not user-friendly at all, as DJ Mustard have produced many songs, it is more convenient for users to find his works  according to years, artists, albums etc. But the page has just listed all of  his works one by one in a three row table format so users have to scroll for a very long time to find a specific song. It would be better to add more the filter options or adding a search button as to be more user-friendly.

In general, as a hip hop music producer, this personal website has demonstrated DJ Mustard as a clean and efficient person by the website’s tidiness and structure. Also the consistent layout usage has reflected that he is having his own consistent and characteristic style which is strong and well-known on his music production. In addition, the color tone used in the website is sticked to the most updated hip hop fashion which is in white, yellow and gold, this can be showing  DJ Mustard is trendy as well as his music.
